The glossary helps to ensure that words are always translated the same way. Unlike the translation replacements where you have to correct mistranslated text, the glossary will translate to words right away.

How does the glossary work?

The glossary is designed to always translate words/short phrases in the same way. By passing translations directly to Clonable, our translation engine has the ability to consider grammar and sentence structure of the target language.

How to use the glossary

The glossary can be found in the clone's translation settings under the "Glossary" tab. Here you can enter words/terms from the source language to the target language. At the Source, enter the original word (e.g. "Bank"), and at Target, enter the translated word (e.g. "Sofa"). We recommend using the singular word. The glossary will automatically take grammar into account.

Updating the glossary

The new/removed translations in the glossary are not applied until the glossary has finished updating.

After you have created the different translations, you still need to update the glossary, which you can do with the green button "Update glossary". When you click this button you will get another pop-up asking for confirmation. When you update the glossary, a loading bar will appear indicating that the glossary is updating. This process can take about 5 minutes. In the meantime, it is not possible to create new glossary translations.

When do you use the glossary?

The glossary is designed to make correct translations. This can help if your website uses a lot of specific subject terminology, which ensures that recurring translations are always translated the same way. Examples include:

Homonyms

Homonyms are words with a double meaning, which can sometimes take on the wrong form of the word. This can happen when Clonable has little context, such as menu items or titles. Examples of homonyms are:

• Bow
  • Bow for archery
  • Tied ribbon
• Lime
  • A kind a fruit
  • A kind of material
• Bank
  • A river bank
  • A savings bank

Keyword research

If you have done a keyword research for the foreign market, you can use the glossary to ensure that your terms are guarded in the translations as well.

Specialist jargon

If you work with specific jargon in your website, the translations of those specific terms are probably very important. With the glossary, you make sure those translations are always predictable, according to your own preferences.

When is it best not to use the glossary?

For the following points, it is better not to use the glossary:

• Modify whole sentences
  • This is best done with the editor.
• One-off translations
  • This is best done with the editor.
• Changing translations
  • This is best done with the translation replacements.
• Excluding brand names
  • This is best done with the translation exclusions.
